What's the best way to get a legitimate car loan with less than perfect credit?

there are so many companies out there offering easy approval for people with bad credit. I want to go trough the banks but they almost always turn me down. Are dealerships any less sympathetic? I know some down payment is expected but how much should I be expecting if I'm looking at a car with a $23K price tag?? Thanks everyone for answering.

Save enough money so the loan amounts to only a fraction of the car cost, like 1/3 or even 1/4.

Then the legimate, low-priced lender doesn't have much risk, and will be much more inclined to fork over the cash!

As long as you can provide proof of steady employment, you can get a loan. Dealers tend to charge more interest than banks.

The banks you are dealing with are problem the same one the dealerships deal with. Call your local dealership for a pre-approval. If the dealership is able to approve you, you may be required to have 10% of the price of the vehicle as down payment. That is the usual for people with bad credit.
